Fran's Place 1018: Semi-Spiral Crochet Area Rug

We recently moved into a new place with all hardwood flooring that I absolutely love! It's not shiny or tile looking at all and actually has texture to it.

As Much as I love it, the echo in the place is a bit much...so I decided to make some area rugs. There are lots of patterns out there but I have been wanting to incorporate the front post stitch into an area rug ever since I made my first pair of slippers using that stitch.

The way the front post stitch raises the backside makes it so cushiony when you step on it and then adding the no-slip padding underneath gave it even more cushion. This is the first area rug that I have made and created a pattern for.

Approximate size: 48” across

Materials:

Medium weight yarn – approx. 850 to 900 yards depending on size
6.5 mm crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain
Sl st – slip stitch
Dc – double crochet
Fpdc – front post double crochet
Inc – increase – 2 fpdc around next dc from previous round
Cluster – 4 dc in same stitch

Instructions:

Round 1: make a magic circle and ch 2, work 11 dc into circle, sl st into top of ch 2

Round 2: ch 2, *fpdc around next dc from previous round, dc in stitch immediately behind, repeat from * to end, the last fpdc will be around the ch 2 from previous round, sl st into top of ch 2

Round 3: ch 2, *fpdc around next 6 dc from previous round, dc in stitch immediately behind, repeat from * to end, the last fpdc will be around the ch 2 from previous round, sl st into top of ch 2

Round 4: ch 2, *fpdc around next 2 dc from previous round, inc, repeat from * to end, inc around last dc and ch 2 from previous round, sl st into top of ch 2

Round 5 to 14: Repeat round 4 but add one (for example fpdc around next 3 dc from previous round, then inc) the next round will add one, so it will be fpdc around next 4 then 5 and so on. Instead of counting when the rug gets bigger you can just work the fpdc up to the first part of the inc then work the inc around the second part of the inc as shown in the video tutorial.

If you want it bigger then continue with the increasing rounds until desired size. Or if you want it smaller don’t do as many increasing rounds.

Round 15: ch 2, dc in each stitch to end, sl st into top of ch 2

Round 16: ch 2, 3 dc in same stitch, skip next stitch, *cluster, skip next stitch, repeat from * to end, sl st into top of ch 2, fasten off and weave in ends.

To have two colors you can work one color for three rows then change colors or however you want it to look. I worked 3 rounds of the beige throughout and 3 rounds of brown the first 6 rounds then 4 rounds of brown then 6 rounds of brown. You can add more colors or just have it all one color.
