Dad’s Blanket | Blankets

It took me a few months to complete this blanket for my dad because I didn’t work on it continuously, I worked other projects as well. I used the free pattern for the “Granny Goes Ripple” Afghan that can be found by clicking here.

I obviously didn’t change colors throughout and decided to go with a multi-colored yarn – I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in High Sierra. Although it doesn’t show the “ripple” effect in the body of the blanket, it does have the nice ripple edging.

Using the one color makes it much easier to work up because you are not continuously changing colors and the multi color comes out nice. In the third photo below the blanket measured about 60″ x 58″. 

I decided to steam block it to try to make it a little bigger, by stretching as I steamed. You can watch a video tutorial on how to steam block crochet and knitted items using acrylic yarn by clicking here.

The blanket measured about 63″ x 59″ after steam blocking/stretching, so you can see in the first photo that it is a little bigger. 

Steam blocking also helps to soften the yarn more. I also like that it helps the rippled edges lay more flat. You have to be really careful when steam blocking because the steam is extremely hot! I used some fleece gloves as I steamed and stretched.

This next photo shows the blanket draped over my couch. It is a heavy blanket and can be used on the couch when lounging or on top of a bed to add weight and warmth. The yarn I used is already soft and comfy but the steam blocking did make it even more cuddly. Another yarn that I would recommend for this project is Lion Brand Wool Ease.

Here is a photo of the Granny Goes Ripple Throw that I made using the whole kit that a co-worker had given to me as a gift.

As you can see there a number of possibilities as far as color combinations that you can use.
