Messy Bun/Ponytail Beanies | Fashion

These beanies were really popular last year and I finally found the time to make my own patterns for them. I found some free ones here but I really wanted to incorporate some stitches that I like so I decided to do my own.

The blue one is one that I made for my co-worker and I love how it turned out! I haven’t made one for myself yet but plan to. I used Caron Simply Soft in Ocean and a 5.5 mm crochet hook. I started at the top by crocheting around a hair tie and worked down.

Materials Needed:

• Medium weight yarn – I used Caron Simply Soft in Ocean
• 5.5 mm crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• Stitch Marker
• 1 Hair tie
• Scissors

*Note: Caron Simply Soft yarn is considered a medium weight yarn but is actually thinner than most other medium weight yarns. I did another one in black using Red Heart With Love and it came out bigger, so I had to adjust the pattern by doing less increasing rows and trying it on before doing the edging. Abbreviations:

• Ch – chain
• Sc – single crochet
• Hdc – half double crochet
• Dc – double crochet
• Sl st – slip stitch
• Cluster – [yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull through], 3 times, pull through 5 loops
• Fpdc – front post double crochet

Instructions:

Round 1: sl st over hair tie, ch 1, 30 sc around the hair tie, do not join, work in the round marking the first stitch as you go

Round 2: *hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around, do not join

Round 3: *hdc in next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around, do not join

Round 4: *hdc in next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around, do not join

Round 5: *hdc in next 5 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around, do not join (This is where I stopped increasing with the thicker medium weight yarn and it was still a little loose, so I had to do 3 decreases in the start and 3 decreases in the end of the last single crochet row to make it tighter)

Round 6: *hdc in next 6 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around, do not join (I stop increasing here – circle should be about 6” from outer side to outer side – my head is about 21” around)

Round 7: *hdc in next 7 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around, do not join (Circle should be about 6 ½” from the outer side to outer side – fits heads that are about 22” around) If you want it bigger go another round of increase by doing 8 then 2 and so on.

Round 8: *2 hdc in next stitch, skip next stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to first stitch

Round 9: sl st in between first two hdc, ch 1, *cluster, ch 1 in between the next 2 hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to the first cluster

Round 10: sl in the first ch 1 space, ch 2, hdc in same ch 1 space, *2 hdc in next ch 1 space, repeat from * around

Round 11 – 15 or the length that you want, repeat rounds 9 and 10

Round 16: dc in each stitch around including the ch 1 spaces (you can also work hdc & fphdc instead of dc & fpdc for the edging)

Round 17: *fpdc around next dc, dc in next dc stitch, repeat from * around

Round 18: *fpdc around fpdc, dc in next dc stitch, repeat from * around

Round 19 – 20 or the length you want for your edge: repeat round 18

Round 21: sc in each stitch around, fasten off and weave in ends and enjoy!

Instructions:

Round 1: sl st onto hair tie, 30 sc around hair tie, do not join – move marker up in the first stitch as you go

Round 2: hdc in each stitch around

Round 3: *hdc in two stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around

Round 4: *hdc in three stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around

Round 5: *hdc in four stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to first hdc (this is where I stop increasing for my size head, if you keep going in the same sequence you can make it bigger or if you want it smaller make less increasing rounds)

Round 6: ch 2, dc in next stitch and each remaining stitch around, sl st to top of ch 2

Round 7: ch 2, *fpdc around next dc, dc in next stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to top of ch 2

Round 8: ch 2 *fpdc around next dc (not the fpdc), dc in next stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to top of ch 2

Round 9 to 13: repeat round 8

Round 14: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to ch 1

Round 15: ch 2, dc in each stitch around, sl st to ch 2

Round 16: ch 2, *fpdc around next dc, dc in next stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to ch 2

Round 17: ch 2, *fpdc around next fpdc, dc in next stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to ch 2

Round 18: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, fasten off and weave in ends and enjoy! (if you want the edge to be thicker, work another round or two of round 17)

This next one is what I call the convertible ponytail/messy bun beanie because you can wear it with the top open or closed.

I used Caron Simply Soft in Charcoal Heather and the 5.5 mm crochet hook. This pattern is worked from the bottom up and is so warm and comfy. It is actually my favorite beanie!

Work 64 double crochet foundation chain, (wrap foundation chain around the head to make sure it is tight or loose enough and adjust accordingly making sure to end on an even number) sl st to the first stitch to create a circle making sure not to twist the foundation chain

Round 1: ch 2, *fpdc around next dc, dc in next available stitch (the stitch immediately behind the fpdc), repeat from * around, sl st to ch 2 – 64 stitches  Round 2: ch 2, *fpdc around fpdc, dc in next dc stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to ch 2 – 64 stitches

Round 3: repeat round 2 – 64 stitches

Round 4: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to first sc – 64 stitches

Round 5: ch 2, dc in each stitch around, sl st to ch 2 – 64 stitches

Round 6: ch 1, sc in the same stitch as ch 1 and in each remaining stitch around, sl st to first sc – 64 stitches

Round 7: ch 2, *fpdc around dc from round 5 (below the first sc), dc in next available sc stitch, repeat from * around sl st to ch 2 – 64 stitches

Round 8: repeat round 6 – 64 stitches

Round 9: ch 2, fpdc around dc from round 7 (not the fpdc), dc in next available sc stitch, (sc stitch above the fpdc), repeat from * around, sl st to ch 2 – 64 stitches

Round 10: repeat round 6 – 64 stitches

Round 11 to 17: repeat rounds 9 and 6 or until the desired length – 64 stitches  Round 18: ch 1, sc in 60 stitches around, sc decrease in last two stitches, sl st to first sc – 62 stitches

Round 19: repeat round 9 – 62 stitches

Round 20: ch 1, sc in 58 stitches around, sc decrease in last two stitches, sl st to first sc – 60 stitches

Round 21: repeat round 9 – 60 stitches

Round 22: ch 1, sc in 56 stitches around, sc decrease in last two stitches, sl st to first sc – 58 stitches

Round 23: repeat round 9 – 58 stitches

Round 24: ch 1, sc in 54 stitches around, sc decrease in last two stitches, sl st to first sc – 56 stitches

Round 25: repeat round 9 – 56 stitches

Round 26: ch 1, sc in 52 stitches around, sc decrease in last two stitches, sl st to first sc – 54 stitches

Round 27: repeat round 9 – 54 stitches

Round 28: ch 1, sc in 50 stitches around, sc decrease in last two stitches, sl st to first sc – 52 stitches

Round 29: ch 1, *skip next stitch, sc in next stitch, repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1,

Round 30: sl st in each stitch around including ch 1 spaces, fasten off and weave in ends, turn beanie inside out  Cut about 18” of yarn (or you can use any material of your choice) and using the tapestry needle, thread the yarn through the ch 1 spaces ending with both ends coming out the same ch 1 space. 

Depending on how you want to wear the beanie, you can close it completely by pulling it completely closed and tying it to secure. Then if you want to use it as a ponytail or messy bun beanie, pull it closed to however much you want the opening to be and tie it, turn beanie right side out and enjoy!
