Pleated Mesh Purse | Bags

This was the second purse/bag pattern that I made. I love this purse! The little coin purse is something that I whipped up with the leftover bits for my husband's cousin who had ordered this particular bag. The pattern for the coin purse is not included in the written pattern but it is the same just scaled down.

I really love the color of this bag, I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Mango and I found the lining material at Hobby Lobby as well. My husband was actually the one who helped me pick the colors out. He also found the lining which I think is perfect for the mango color. 

I think the material has an antique look to it that I really love.

The brown one is the one that I made for myself and I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Coffee and the lining was also from Hobby Lobby.

I did the strap longer on the mango one because my cousin wanted to wear it as a cross body bag. Mine is worn on the shoulder and is the regular strap size. The pattern has instructions for both strap styles.

It only took one skein of yarn to complete this bag and about 1/2 a yard of material. I used a 5 mm crochet hook and a 4 mm crochet hook for the final edging. There are also instructions for including a medium-size button to close the bag.

Base:

Row 1: ch 19, sc in 2nd ch from hook & in next 17 sts, 4 sc in last ch, working on the other side, sc in next 16 sts, 3 sc in last ch, do not join – 40 sts

Bag: 

Row 1: *sc & dc in bl of next st, sk next st, repeat from * around moving marker up as you go

Row 2: *sc & dc in bl of next dc, sk next sc, repeat from * around

Row 3-12: Repeat row 2 (keep repeating if you want it taller)

Row 13-15: sc in bl of each st around moving marker up as you go, at end of row 15, fasten off

Sides/Strap:

Fold side to where about 5 sts are on both sides and clip the two folds together as shown in the next photo

Row 1: join yarn two sts from folded sts as shown in next photo, ch 1, sc in each st across to include the sts in the fold as shown in the next two photos

Row 2: ch 1, sc in next 16 sts across, turn

Row 3: ch 1, sc decrease in bl of first two sts, sc in bl of next 12 sts, sc decrease in bl of last two sts, turn

Row 4: ch 1, sc decrease in fl of the first two sts, sc in fl of next 10 sts, sc decrease in fl of last two sts, turn

Row 5: ch 1, sc decrease in bl of first two sts, sc in bl of next 8 sts, sc decrease in bl of last two sts, turn

Row 6: ch 1, sc decrease in fl of the first two sts, sc in fl of next 6 sts, sc decrease in fl of last two sts, turn

Row 7: ch 1, sc decrease in bl of first two sts, sc in bl of next 4 sts, sc decrease in bl of last two sts, turn

Row 8: ch 1, sc in fl of each st across, turn – 6 sts

Row 9: ch 1, sc in bl of each st across, turn – 6 sts

Repeat rows 8 & 9 until the strap measures approx. 19″ from row 1 after folding side as shown in the next photo while stretching just a little bit (approx. 23″ for across body style)

Fasten off leaving about an 8″ tail making sure to end on an fl row and follow the same steps for the other side of the bag/strap ending this time on a bl row

Using the 8″ tail you will use a tapestry needle to fasten straps together at the top as shown in the next two photos by whip-stitching them together

Edging:

Row 1: Using 4 mm hook, join yarn to any corner of the strap, ch 1, sc in bl of each st across to strap, sc evenly up side of the strap, do not join

Row 2-3: sc in bl of each st across bag & up the strap, sl st to corner sc and fasten off

Repeat rows 1-3 for the other side of the strap, weave in all ends

Lining:

Fold the material and place the purse on top of the material with the bottom down by the fold. Then cut about 2″ above the top of the purse and 1″ on the sides leaving enough material to do the pockets.

You then fold the sides of the material for both pockets twice about 1/2 an inch and iron, then fold the top of the material for the purse about 1″ twice and iron.

Cut a piece of elastic the length of the width of the pocket and then in half. Sew both sides of the elastic onto the material.

Sew the material over the elastic first then the sides and bottom of the pockets, then sew them onto the lining, then sew the sides of the lining with the tops folded.

Turn the crochet purse inside out and put inside the lining with the design showing and sew the top of the lining to the purse all the way around. Turn purse right side out and then your done!
